An Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
