The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, increasing strains between the two countries following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.
Rising Tensions coupled with Claims
Talking to journalists over the weekend, the US president threatened similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the country is “very sick too” and governed by an unwell individual who likes making narcotics and distributing it to the United States."
Although Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.
A Strained Partnership
Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed cross-party backing in the US capital, yet ties have soured markedly since Trump was elected.
Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters laid down arms following a landmark accord.
Petro's Strong Rebuttal
When asked if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."
The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, firmly denied these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he affirmed.
"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.
"Should American forces attack peasants, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest the president, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the fierce spirit of the populace," Petro warned.
From Insurgent to Leader
Petro spent a period in his early life participating with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed to have ever took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.
"I swore to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up the fight," he vowed.
Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Rejection
The Colombian defence minister stated that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.
Several members of Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump, yet figures spanning the ideological divide have rejected the possibility of American military action on Colombia.
Diplomatic and Financial Strains
Washington withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US military personnel to refuse unlawful commands. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes against the president, the first lady and a number of associates.
Simultaneously the US was building up its forces in the region and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed operations on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
